Bennett Story Garden Book Club triumphs with first prize at Shrewsbury Flower Show

Wolverhampton Grammar School’s Bennett Story Garden Book Club is celebrating victory at this year's Secondary School Competition at the Shrewsbury Flower Show, where they proudly took home the first prize. Their winning entry, titled "A World of Flowers," captured the hearts of the judges and reflected the club’s passion for gardening, reading, and celebrating diversity at WGS.

The students' hard work and dedication paid off as they cultivated a beautiful array of nasturtiums, dahlias, cosmos, and sunflowers in The Bennett Story Garden throughout the summer term. Their award-winning design, centred around the theme "Around the World," featured the national flowers of various countries, skilfully arranged in raised beds. The centrepiece of their display—a giant papier-mâché book—symbolised the club's love for literature and storytelling.

Held on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August, the Shrewsbury Flower Show saw the raised beds judged by celebrity gardeners, who were clearly impressed by the creativity and attention to detail shown by the Bennett Story Garden Book Club.

This delightful achievement was made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Merchant Taylors’ Foundation, which helped establish The Bennett Story Garden in memory of much-loved colleague Carrie Bennett, who served as the Director of Marketing and Communications at WGS from 2014 to 2021. Her passion for gardening, reading, and the wellbeing of others lives on through this beautiful space, which was officially opened by her family on 28th September 2023. Since its opening, the garden has become a place of inspiration not only for WGS students but also for those from local state schools.
