Class of 2024 achieve 100% pass rate

Students from Wolverhampton Grammar School consistently do well in examinations across our extensive range of subjects; the Class of 2024 upheld this tradition with impressive results.

An impressive 20% of our 2024 A Level cohort were awarded an A*, with six students achieving straight A*s. Over 42% of grades achieved were A* to A, with 70% achieving A* to B grades. This strong performance mirrors last year's stellar results, which recently earned WGS recognition as the top performing Sixth Form in Wolverhampton, showcasing the unwavering determination and hard work of all the students.

All students who pursued Cambridge Technical qualifications in Sport and Physical Education or Information Technology excelled, with 100% of students in the latter gaining at least a distinction.

We congratulate all our Sixth Formers on their outstanding results at A Level and Cambridge Technical, which has led them to securing places at prestigious universities, including Russell Group institutions, and on the most competitive courses including medicine, dentistry, engineering, architecture, law and computer science.

Reflecting on the performance of this year’s cohort, Head Nic Anderson comments,

I am so pleased that we can celebrate stellar results again this year.  All students have worked incredibly hard, and these excellent results are a testament to their relentless dedication, determination and drive.

We wholeheartedly share in the pride that our student’s family and friends will be feeling today, and we wish all our departing students every success as they leave us.  I must also extend my thanks and congratulations to the talented staff here at WGS.

GCSE students on cloud 9 after top grades

Wolverhampton Grammar School is celebrating another year of exceptional GCSE results, with 77% of all exams awarded the top grades of 9 to 6 (equivalent to A* to B).

There were stellar performances across the board from a range of subjects. Not only was the 77% average reflected across English, maths and the sciences, there were some outstanding results spanning the entire academic landscape. Noteworthy subjects include Art, Computer Science, and Drama (all over 93% 9 to 6).

The headlines in brief are:

  • 77% of GCSE entries at Wolverhampton Grammar School have been awarded the top grades of 9 to 6 (A* to B equivalent)
  • 41% of entries were rewarded with the top two grades, 9 and 8
  • 10 students achieved a remarkable 10 or more GCSEs at grade 9 or 8.

Head, Nic Anderson expressed his pride in the students’ achievements, stating:

We are delighted with this year’s results, which reflect the dedication and hard work of both our students and staff. At WGS, we offer a wide range of GCSE subjects, continuing into our Sixth Form with over 20 A-Levels and two Cambridge Technical qualifications. The breadth of success above demonstrates our commitment to an all-round education tailored to the individual needs of your child.

I am pleased that the vast majority of GCSE students have chosen to stay with us for Sixth Form. I look forward to supporting them as they continue their educational journey and welcoming new students who will join us in September.

GCSEs play an increasingly important role in enabling both universities and employers to assess an applicant’s academic ability and potential. GCSEs act as a useful benchmark for universities in particular, for example, a university degree course offering a year abroad option would usually require a language at GCSE.

In 2024:

  • 77% grade 9, 8, 7 or 6 awards (equivalent to A to B)
  • 41% coveted Grade 9s and 8s awarded this year
  • 10 students achieved 10 or more GCSEs at grade 9 or 8.

To achieve the top grade of 9 takes a combination of excellent teaching, hard work and determination. Happy students do well and for so many of our students to achieve 9, 8 or 7s is a credit to their brilliant teachers and the extraordinary pastoral support in place at School.
