Sport For All

PE and Sport have a long tradition at Wolverhampton Grammar School and we are proud of our ethos of ‘Sport for All’.

All students will have the opportunity to achieve their potential regardless of ability or previous experience. Sport is offered at all ages right through to Sixth Form where Sport & Physical Education remains a popular Sixth Form subject choice.

As a co-educational school, we offer more than 20 sports-based activities through curricular and extra–curricular provision. Sports participation across our Junior, Senior and Sixth Form is high. Our Sports staff includes coaches and tutors who have national and international competition experience and expertise. Many of our staff have themselves, competed at a top level and can offer dedicated coaching to students looking to focus on a particular sport or discipline.

The Sports Department run international sports tours which have seen 100+ students in Years 8 – 13 visit the Netherlands, Portugal and South Africa over the last year alone. Students enjoyed international matches against local sides in hockey, football and netball as well as experiencing cultural activities. 2023 saw the return of our WGS ski trips with a visit to Obertauren in Austria.

Our WGS sporting teams have enjoyed success at local, county, regional and national level competing against local schools as well as an extensive network of independent schools throughout the region and country. We also proudly celebrate the sporting achievements of WGS students in and outside school and have several students who represent GB and England in their chosen sport. Each year we welcome a Sports Scholar to our Sixth Form, and an OW Scholarship is available to financially support their place at the School.

As well as performance, WGS prides itself on developing students’ ability to lead, officiate and coach sport as well. Students in Year 9 and 10 have the option to engage in the WGS Sports Leadership programme where they learn how to deliver physical activity sessions across a variety of sports from aerobics and dance to the more traditional invasion team games. This culminates in the WGS Junior Sports Festival where our leaders run a tournament style day for local primary school students in the area.

Sport features heavily in House Competitions.  Events such as the House Tug-o-war, House Basketball and Sports Day are always fiercely competed as everyone strives to do their best for the House
