Celebrating a love of gardening, reading and diversity

Wolverhampton Grammar School’s Bennett Story Garden Book Club is excited to participate in this year's Secondary School Competition at the Shrewsbury Flower Show. The club has been working hard to create an inspiring and meaningful entry titled "A World of Flowers," which reflects their passion for gardening, reading, and celebrating diversity at WGS.

Throughout the summer term, students from Years 7 to 10 have been busy growing nasturtiums, dahlias, cosmos, and sunflowers in The Bennett Story Garden for their entry. Their design for the competition, centred around the theme "Around the World," showcases the national flowers of various countries. The centrepiece of their display is a giant papier-mâché book, symbolising the club's love for literature and storytelling. In addition, the students have crafted hot air balloon structures painted with pressed and dried flowers, all grown in the garden.

The Shrewsbury Flower Show will take place on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August. During the event, the raised beds will be judged by a celebrity gardener. The Bennett Story Garden Book Club is thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase their work and creativity at such a prestigious event.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Merchant Taylors’ Foundation, The Bennett Story Garden was created in memory of much-loved colleague Carrie Bennett, who served as the Director of Marketing and Communications at Wolverhampton Grammar School from 2014 to 2021. Sadly, Carrie lost her battle with cancer at the age of 49, just before Christmas 2022. Her love for gardening, reading and the wellbeing our the WGS community lives on through this beautiful space, which was officially opened by Carrie's family on 28th September 2023. Since then, it has become a place of inspiration for students from WGS and local state schools.

Come and visit The Bennett Story Garden and Jenyns Library at our Whole School Open Day on Saturday 5th October. Explore our campus, meet our dedicated staff, and learn more about our vibrant community at WGS. We look forward to welcoming you!
