Empowering our female tech pioneers of the future
A significant gender imbalance persists in Computer Science education in England, with just 20% of GCSE and 15% of A Level entries in 2023 being from female students. This is a stark reflection of the nationwide and global underrepresentation of women in this flourishing field.
Despite being one of the oldest schools in the country, we are proud to be forward looking in our approach at WGS. Hence our IT & Computer Science Department have committed to closing this gender gap and fostering an inclusive environment in the classroom by participating in the National Centre for Computing Education’s (NCCE) ‘I Belong: encouraging girls into computer science’ programme. The programme equips educators with support and resources to break down stereotypes and empower our female tech pioneers of the future.

The department shall soon be launching the ‘Apps for Good’ 2024 Showcase in School; a nationwide annual competition designed to celebrate the achievements of young male and female tech innovators. Students will be tasked to design a prototype app based on a social cause with support from industry professionals.
